During hurricane season, having a disaster preparedness plan may help you save your business. Disasters can be hurricanes, fires, riots, strikes, or even the small spark from a poor quality power system that destroys a key server. Any event that has the ability to prevent your business from operating normally is a potential disaster. Your information technology (IT) systems are vulnerable to a variety of disruptions, ranging from mild (e.g., short-term power outage, disk drive failure) to severe (e.g., equipment destruction, fire) from a variety of sources such as natural disasters to terrorists actions.

Have You:

• Conducted a Business Impact Analysis?
• Identified Critical IT Resources?
• Identified Disruption Impacts and Allowable Outage Times?
• Developed Recovery Priorities?
• Identified Preventive Controls?
• Developed Recovery Strategies?
• Implemented Data Backup Methods?

You Need To:

• Know where you will go if you have to evacuate and plan your route
• Have disaster supplies on hand: Flashlight, radio, extra batteries, first aid kit, water, essential medications, and non-perishable food
• Protect valuable documents and property, including:
• Personal items: Birth certificates, Marriage certificates, Social security cards, Wills, etc.
• Business items: Computer backup of important electronic data ­ customer information, accounting records, payroll, sales forecasts, email, etc
• Develop an emergency communication plan
• Take pictures of and inventory your property
• Have an emergency plan for your employees to follow during a disaster
  

Reccommendations

• Back-up mission critical systems and do a test restore to make sure your back-up captured data.
• If possible, move servers and laptops to a secure location.
• Get hardware and important files off of floor.
